Please edit/critique my college application essay?0MeMe2012-11-04 09:02:11
its not complete yet; i dont know how exactly i should end it. the topic is: describe a meaningful event, experience or accomplishment in your life and how it will affect your college experience or your contribution to the UF campus community. You may want to reflect on your ideas about student responsibility, academic integrity, campus citizenship or a call to service. Originally as baffled and flabbergasted as any student entering high school, I had not a clue about my life’s direction; desiring to change the world was too broad a concept to single out a pursuit with such little direction thus far. Aspiring to complete my community service hours and looking for insight into my future plans, that summer I immediately launched a volunteer job in which I would hold the responsibility of coordinating the summer camp activities of elementary-aged children. Since my freshman year, I have volunteered as a camp counselor for younger children with the immediate realization that I delighted in our interactions and wished to pursue a career relating to pre-adolescents. To the roughly three hundred students I’ve worked with to date, I have been a role model, a friend, and a source of encouragement. With such power thrust within me to affect the lives of these young people, I have derived from those various summer jobs an implanted sense of responsibility, as well as impeccable time-management skills and the drive to coordinate and complete my assigned tasks. Upon entering high school, I opted to take an intro to psychology class. With my thirst for knowledge and much intrinsic motivation, I longed to uncover the mysteries of human behavior. The first days of class led to an epiphany, in which I had chosen child psychology for my life’s pursuit. Besides the delectation of inspiring and assisting troubled children, a career such as this would help to spark a brighter future for America’s next generation. What better way to acquire such knowledge needed to change the world than to attend the most prestigious university in the state of Florida? As a Florida Gator, I feel as though I would be a positive, motherly source of inspiration to my campus community in times of hardship, as well as a self-sufficient, prospering and worldly student, growing everyday in a stimulating learning environment.
Thesis vs. No Thesis Option?1Sabra2012-10-08 01:15:03
I got accepted in two master's programs in child psychology . One is very research oriented and requires a thesis , and the other is more practical and involves no thesis . However, if I go to school with the degree of non - thesis , I have the opportunity to work as a research assistant in a psychology lab . I know the important research experience to enter doctoral programs in psychology , but I also know that many doctoral programs like to see that you've done a thesis too . What do you think ? Which school should I choose ?
Based on this (short!) essay, if you were a scholarship essay reader, would you give me a grant?1lu lu2012-10-13 10:00:02
Oh, and any ideas for a good title? Thanks in advance for your reading, not very long. MedlinePlus -------------------- MedlinePlus I was supposed to answer the questions: MedlinePlus one. Why are you applying for this scholarship? MedlinePlus b. What accomplishments make him deserving of financial assistance? MedlinePlus c. What are your career goals? MedlinePlus ------------ MedlinePlus Ok here it is: MedlinePlus MedlinePlus My dream is to be an ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) therapist who specializes in children with autism. Autistic children can be some of the sweetest kids you never know, but unfortunately, its true capabilities are usually buried under the disease, so they need therapy to help unleash their potential. I chose to pursue this career not for salary or because autism is the fastest growing disability in development in the United States, but for a more personal reason: I have three cousins with autism. MedlinePlus I spent the summer of 2007 working as a nanny for two of them, trying to raise money for college. It was very interesting to see how their lives changed by autism that next summer, I found a job at an ABA therapy for autistic children. I loved it and gave me a desperately needed financial opportunity, the beginning of my third year in college (fall 2009) is when my parents will withdraw all financial support from me and fully expected to live on my own. MedlinePlus I am currently a sophomore in the second semester, majoring in Psychology with hopes of eventually becoming an ABA therapist. In the little time I have left, while I'm still financially secure, I am looking for the most effective ways to earn money as possible, I have to be able to pay for school while still having enough money to live on half of come fall. In order to be able to secure scholarships, I turn my attention almost exclusively to my notes and doing well in my classes - and is certainly paying off: last semester I gained an average of 3.93 and a member the Phi Beta Kappa national honor society. MedlinePlus I am still very concerned, however, because if it is I have to choose between buying food or finish college, I will have no choice but to leave school. I'm working hard to earn money as possible, but I need all the help they can financially, or who may have to make the painful decision to leave school (and essentially my dream job) so I can afford the necessities Basic. If I can finish school, I can not find work as ABA therapist, and bring hope to many autistic children as possible, not only my cousin, but all of them. MedlinePlus MedlinePlus ------------- MedlinePlus Thank you very much for reading this!

I have to write an essay for my course in observational astronomy. Basically what we're seeing is the night sky ( movement of the moon , the brightness of the stars and planets colors ) . MedlinePlus MedlinePlus I have never before written an observational study . Is there a specific format / style to write this in ? MedlinePlus MedlinePlus Be MLA is typically English and Humanities papers and APA for psychology and social science papers . Then there's Chicago / Turabian . I also found " CSE " , which is for the life sciences and other . AIP Physics and is (not sure if it is strictly just magazines though .. ) MedlinePlus MedlinePlus I emailed my instructor (i do school through distance education ) and told me that the format is not really a problem as long as I am consistent when it comes to dating . Normally there would be much citation made in an observational study , but I am also using a computer program ( its free -ware , so no CD ) , which helps with finding objects in the night sky I can not see the outside myself. MedlinePlus MedlinePlus So I guess the main question here is , that style has information on citing appointment software that are not on the CD . I searched high and low across the Internet and I feel like im running in circles and can not find a concrete answer . MedlinePlus MedlinePlus oh , and does the formatting title pages also matter ? MedlinePlus lol MedlinePlus thanks for any help anyone can give!

Describe the unique qualities that attract specific school or grade school (including preferred admission and dual degree programs) to which you are applying at the University of Michigan. Where's the thesis? I think its the first paragraph but I just want to make sure?0b renda2012-10-03 14:43:48
The research, published online Thursday in the journal Science, found that students who read a passage, then took a test asking them to recall what they had read, retained about 50 percent more of the information a week after students who used two other methods. MedlinePlus MedlinePlus One of those methods - repeatedly studying the material - is familiar to legions of students who cram before exams. The other - that students draw detailed diagrams documenting what they are learning - is prized by many teachers because it forces students to make connections between facts MedlinePlus. MedlinePlus These other methods not only are popular, the researchers reported, but also seem to give students the illusion that they know best material they MedlinePlus. MedlinePlus In the experiments, the students were asked to predict how remember a week after using one of the methods to learn the material. Those who took the test after reading the passage predicted they would remember less than the other students predicted - but the results were the opposite MedlinePlus. MedlinePlus "I believe that learning has to do with the recovery, all about reconstructing our knowledge," said lead author, Jeffrey Karpicke, assistant professor of psychology at Purdue University. "I think we're tapping into something fundamental about how the mind works when we talk about recovery." MedlinePlus MedlinePlus Several cognitive scientists and education experts said the results were surprising. MedlinePlus MedlinePlus Students who took memory tests may "recognize some gaps in their knowledge," said Marcia Linn, an education professor at the University of California, Berkeley, "and could return to the ideas in the back of his mind or the front of your mind. " MedlinePlus MedlinePlus When asked later what they have learned, he continued, can more easily "retrieve and organize their knowledge in a way that makes sense to them." MedlinePlus MedlinePlus Researchers involved 200 college students in two experiments, assigning them to read several paragraphs about a scientific subject -. How the digestive system works, for example, or the different types of vertebrate muscle tissue MedlinePlus MedlinePlus In the first experiment, the students were divided into four groups. One did nothing more than read the text for five minutes. Another studied the passage in four consecutive five minutes. MedlinePlus MedlinePlus A third group engaged in "concept mapping," in which, with the passage in front of them, organized the information from the passage into a kind of diagram, writing details and ideas in hand made bubbles and linking the bubbles an organized manner. MedlinePlus MedlinePlus The latter group had a "retrieval practice" test. Without the passage in front of them, they wrote what they remembered in a free-form essay for 10 minutes. Then reread the passage and took another practice test recovery. MedlinePlus MedlinePlus A week later, the four groups were given a short-answer test that assessed their ability to recall facts and draw logical conclusions based on the facts. MedlinePlus MedlinePlus The second experiment focused only on concept mapping and practice testing recovery, with each student doing an exercise using each method. In this initial phase, researchers reported, students who made diagrams while consulting the passage included more detail than students asked to recall what they had read in an essay. MedlinePlus MedlinePlus But when they were evaluated a week later, the students in the test group was much better than the concept mappers. It was even better when evaluated with a short answer test but with no proof that they have to draw a concept map from memory. MedlinePlus MedlinePlus Why retrieval testing helps is still unknown. Perhaps it is because by remembering information we are organizing it and creating routes and connections that our brains later recognize. MedlinePlus MedlinePlus "When they are regaining some memory of a computer, you do not change anything - it's simple playback," said Robert Bjork, a psychologist at the University of California, Los Angeles, who was not involved in the study MedlinePlus However, "when we use our memories by retrieving things, we change our access" to information, Dr. Bjork said. "What I remember is recoverable in the future. In a sense you are practicing what you are going to have to do later." MedlinePlus MedlinePlus It may also be that the struggle involved in the memory of something that helps reinforce in our brains. MedlinePlus MedlinePlus Perhaps that is why students who took retrieval practice tests were less confident about how you would perform a week later.
Should I complete a master's thesis or not?0Sequoyah2012-10-20 12:25:08
I am currently in a master's program in Science of mental health counseling , and plan to continue in a PhD program later. I'm trying to decide weather or not to spend the extra year to complete a master's thesis , it is not necessary. I've heard of some programs that have a thesis can cut its one-year doctoral program , but if the thesis is a year older , is it worth it? MedlinePlus MedlinePlus Also, I'm trying to decide between counseling psychology and clinical psychology programs . I 'm leaning more towards the clinic , I am interested in working with people with eating disorders , but I wonder if I can get hired in a hospital with a doctoral counseling psychology ? Any thoughts / comments / suggestions are welcome .
