Does your choice of PhD research restrict your future research options much?0jaelon2012-11-05 17:24:52
Hello everyone I am going to be applying for PhDs this year and have been looking around at what is available. I'm finishing a masters in physics (in the UK) and I have tried to tailor it in the last year so that I have a medical physics/biophysics flavour to it through research projects and reading modules. Generally I've been looking at medical physics/biophysics PhDs, I'm not particularly certain of one specific area I desperately want to study but something roughly within this field is what I was thinking. However, I found a PhD which caught my eye which is in something called "Psychophysics" which appears to be applications of physics to the field of psychology. The PhD is as part of a research group within the department of physics and the group leader says most people in the group come from an experimental physics background. She encouraged me to apply (even though officially she wanted to get going before I graduate, but said for the right candidate she'd wait). It seems interesting and a great inter-university research project, but I'm a little worried that if I were to do a PhD like this it might restrict my research chances later on. Perhaps if I decided I wanted to move back into a more medical physics research area, would this hold me back? I worked in a medical physics group during the summer and most of the people there hadn't done medical physics PhDs- they'd done condensed matter, or atomic physics etc. I also know a lot of people though who always did the same thing- people who've never done research in anything other than say, radio astronomy. Any advice? Do you think I should apply, even if I'm not sure I would do it if it was offered?

Program Choice: Medical/Graduate School options?1Azaria2016-07-13 23:30:17
Hi all, I'm in a bit of a dilemma. I'm going into second year at uni and have a decsion to make a decision about what I want to specialize/major/minor in. My primary aim is medical school. However, I'd like a back-up should that not work out. I've decided on clinical psychology/neuropsychology -- which implies graduate school. The conundrum: do graduate schools prefer you to specialize, or would a double-major suffice?? Currently, I have been set on doing a double major: Neuroscience/Mental Health Studies. Primarily because a Neuroscience specialist (my original program) requires more chemistry than I'd be able to handle - keeping GPA in mind. + I have developed a strong interest in mental health studies , and am now torn between the two. Q: However, having thought about graduate school, would they not prefer a specialization in a program?????? Q: Also, regarding both medical + graduate school, would co-op be a benefit to me should I pursue a specialist ^??
Is this a good major choice for my future career plans?0mani2012-11-04 05:19:02
I would in applied psychology ( or something like that . ) And earn my 4 years of study at that. Then attend graduate school for two years to become a licensed art therapist while obtaining a master's degree in psychology online . Opinions / help please! :)
Research help please?0Tabi2012-11-05 05:53:40
I have to find a research project to do for my social science course, I have searched everywhere for one I can do myself at home but cant find one. I have to be able to compare it with a published research document. My original idea was childrens gender perceptions but I could find no published research on this. I can do anything to do with crime, children, gender, people and organisations and anything to do with Psychology or sociology. I have to find something relatively easy because I hand it in next week. I need to use interview methods, questionaires etc qualitative and quantitative methods. I really hope someone can recommend a way to do this because I will fail my course otherwise. Thanks so much
