I'm so stressed out about my college major. I need advice?0Jilleon2012-11-04 23:25:13
I'm currently a Psychology major and a Women's Studies minor. Everyday I change what I want to do. I spend hours just looking at different graduate programs and taking career tests to see what I should do with my life. I love Psychology a lot and the classes are really interesting. I know I'm going to have to go to Graduate school and that's not a problem for me. I just don't know if I could deal with being a Psychologist or a therapist. I've looked into being a biology, anthropology and sociology major. I like to write, I like animals and I like learning about people. I just don't know how to fit all of that into a career. Should I change my major, or will the career come to me? Please give me advice![View Answers]
I'm a young college student..tell me, is this a "Good idea" or "Bad idea"?0stacie2012-11-04 22:35:47
I'm a young college student..tell me, is this a "Good idea" or "Bad idea"? I have one more year left as an undergraduate. I plan to go to graduate school in psychology to get my masters. At this university, I could actually become a professor while I get my Ph.D so I may or may not do that. I receive money for going to school so I save that up and by the next 4 years that should be about..."ALOT". Leave and find a job in the city my parents use to work in and become a professor at one of the biggest universities in our state (in that city) and also work in the hospital that is right across from the university as a psychologist while commuting from the paid off home my parents will be renovating this year with no costs other than water, gas for commuting, etc. With no rent payment, I'll continue to save up my money until I have enough to purchase my own home in flat out cash rather than signing a 30 year mortgage contract. By the end of the Ph.D program I should have an estimate of $91,000 (if I spent none of the money and saved that while working (money I'd live off of). then add that to however much I would get annually as a starter off professor and psychologist. I could save until I have the money I'd like to pay for a nice home and then some. What do you all think? This isn't legit. I'm a saver though and just thought this up...[View Answers]

How do you cope with being open-minded and living in the ghetto?0Robret2012-11-04 19:18:24
I was born in Latin America, and I moved to the states like 5 years ago. I'm getting my citizenship soon. My family back in Latin America is lower class. My mother went to college and she used to work as a secretary for a private institution. Even though I was poor I grew up with what some people call "middle-class values". Like you don't spend money that you don't have, independence was always very important, having manners, understanding that wearing expensive sneakers won't fool anyone about my economical background, etc. I'm not saying only middle-class people behave this way, I'm just saying that's usually the label people use. I also grew up listening to Rock, blues and other types of music, saved money and bought my own electric guitar, learned about philosophy while going to school, etc. What I mean to say is that I grew up with an open mind about things. But then we were lucky enough that we moved to the United States, and I was really happy about it. The only problem is what happens to a lot of Latin Americans that moved here from their countries. You end up living in the ghetto. Don't get me wrong, I was living in a poor neighborhood back there, but I had friends in those neighborhoods who were educated, people that were more like me. It's been so hard after I moved here. So many people in the ghetto behave like animals, everybody seems to idolize rappers, and so many people waste their money on stupid shoes and clothing that are so expensive it just doesn't make sense. I had a girlfriend once, but that didn't go too well. She was a nice person, but she would spend all this money on sneakers, plus the fact that a lot of people act in a very rude way, which apparently they don't perceive a being rude. I read a lot about sociology, and psychology, so I understand a lot about American culture. I don't feel like I'm better than the people that were born where I live now, I understand they're just people who have a hard life. And I have no problem with "interracial" relationships, I actually feel sorry for them and wish there was something I could do to stop them from being so ignorant about so many things. But the fact that I feel that way doesn't help me when it comes to make friends or find a girlfriend. I mean, I've been called "******" more than once because I don't wear baggy pants like they do. American culture is so black and white. When I go to free dating websites I usually get matched with white girls, which would be fine by me, but it's such a big deal here. Plus women usually date up, so once you tell them you live in the ghetto that's the end of it. I met Asian girls that I like too, but for some reason they usually go only for the white or the Asian guy only. A have seen a few black and latino girls that I actually liked but then there's always one or two kids and some crazy baby daddy that just got out of prison of something like that. I like America, but I hate the ghetto. I went on vacation last summer, back to my country, and I hooked up with a couple European girls, and my friend moved to Germany thru a program and he has an European girlfriend. Some times I wonder how come some Americans still see themselves as having a freer society than so many countries in Europe. I don't see how I can be offending anybody. My question was deleted before. I'm just asking if there's anybody that's been in a similar situation and how they've managed to turn it into a learning experience. If possible at all.[View Answers]
University of Washington or University of Puget Sound?0Onlin Bus2012-11-04 18:48:05
I'm currently in community college in Washington and would like to transfer to either U of Washington or U of Puget Sound. I am a psychology major, and looking at getting a second major in either business or political science. Which school is better for my degree programs? Also I want a diverse campus with professors who care about teaching. I'm also gay, so I would prefer a school with an accepting environment and a strong community of lgbt students. I understand that being a transfer student and missing out on my first years, it will be really hard for me to fit in. Which school will be easier for me to adjust to? Which school do you think is best for me? Thank you! Also, do you think I have completely ruined this part of my life by attending community college first? I have been really depressed seeing all my friends go off to school, making new friends, etc. I mean, I'm used to living alone so that part of it isn't a big deal to me. Is this "college experience" everyone talks about basically alcohol, partying, drugs, and sex? Because if that's all I'm missing out on, then I don't care haha. I am disappointed I'm missing out on bonding with classmates though :( Thanks! :)[View Answers]

What are my chances of getting into Cornell University?0Derby2012-11-04 11:40:43
Of all the Ivy League schools, Cornell is my absolute number one choice of the eight. Here are some facts about me: Male, 16 years old, Junior in HS, African American CLASSES; I do all the Honors, AP, yada yada yada FRESHMAN YEAR: Honors English 9, Honors Geometry, Honors Biology, Honors Modern World History, Honors Spanish 2, Art 1 (APs aren't offered to freshman at my school) SOPHOMORE YEAR: Honors Trig/Precalc, Accounting I (parents forced me to take it:P), Honors Spanish 3, Honors English 10, Honors Chemistry, AP Government &Politics (3 on the AP test) JUNIOR YEAR (now): AP US History, AP English (Lang &Comp), AP Calculus AB, Honors Spanish 4, Honors Physics (I would've taken AP Physics, but I didn't have room for the Lab Period because I don't have any tech credits) SENIOR YEAR (what I plan to take next year): AP Calculus BC, AP English (Lit &Comp), AP Psychology, AP Spanish 5, AP Chemistry or AP Biology (leaning more towards Biology) *I'm in the Symphonic and Marching Band, so that gets added to my freshman, junior, and senior year schedules. 4.4 GPA as of the end of my sophomore year; my GPA has never dropped below a 4.0 since my freshman year EXTRACURRICULARS: Marching Band (flute, piccolo) Key Club (Awards Historian) Academic Team ACE Mentoring Program (Architecture, Construction, and Engineering Club) Debate Team Leo Club Rock n' Roll Revival (musical production at my school; we give 8 two hour shows over two weeks) SATS: I plan on taking the SAT Critical Reading, Writing, and Mathematics in the spring. I also plan on taking 4 or 5 subject tests. My goal is at least 2000 overall and over 700 on each subject test. COMMUNITY SERVICE: Between 110-120 hours. I know it could be WAY higher and I WANT it way higher. By the way, Leo Club and Key Club are community service organizations. AWARDS AND HONORS: Presidential Award Spanish Student of the Year (Sophomore Year: 2011-2012) National Honor Society Spanish Honor Society Mu Alpha Theta (Math Honor Society) All Shore Band (Freshman Year: 2010-2011) *Auditioning for AllState Band this year and next Uhhhherrrrr....that's basically it! Oh yeah, and I've been employed with a pediatric facility the past two summers. As far as my majors go, I plan on double majoring in either Neurology and Spanish, or Architecture and Spanish. I also want to minor in flute and/or musical performance. I'm planning on applying to Johns Hopkins as well as the Peabody Institute (Neurology and Music) if architecture doesn't work out. I will also be applying to numerous other colleges and universities, not just Cornell and JHU. They just happen to be my top two preferences. Please!! I would just like some advice on how to get into the school of my dreams!! I know the competition is super competitive, but hey, I mean.....SOMEONE has to get in, right? I want that to be me.I know I might sound a little cocky with this question, but I have to be. I want to show this school, and everyone else, that I'm not just another stereotypical black kid in America. I want to show them I'm special and will do whatever it takes to get into this prestigious institution. Any information would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!:)[View Answers]

What are acceptable GRE and Subject GRE scores for a Masters program?0krystle2012-11-04 06:25:27
Specifically, psychology and school psychology. I have not taken the psych subject test yet, but I am typically not a strong standardized test taker. I have a 3.2 gpa in psych and a 3.4 gpa in a related major (Human development and family studies)... about a 3.083 cumulative. I have been doing research since my Sophomore year of college, and I have been doing field work with a school psychologist. Please let me know your expertise :-)![View Answers]

My weighted GPA is more than a 4.0 With this, can I get accepted into Yale or any Ivy League (I wanna do medicine after my undergrad years at the same college). Thanks for ALL your help!!:) BTW: I'm not trying to brag, I just want an honest answer![View Answers]

How do you research/evaluate a college's academics?0Stacy H2012-11-03 21:21:25
So, I want to major in psychology in college with a lot of biology as well (maybe even double major?). So my question is, how do you tell how good a science program at a college is? Their site isn't exactly going to tell you, "we don't really care about biology that much here... all OUR students are actors and dancers". But colleges are always better in some areas than others, so how do you get a sense of that? Are there any reliable sites that review a college's strong and weak points? A list of the top colleges for such-and-such isn't really helpful, because none of the colleges I'm looking at are exactly renowned for a certain department, and they don't seem to make it on those lists.[View Answers]
Can I be an RN if I have a teenage DUI on record?0yeah2012-11-03 20:53:40
I'm 25 have a bachelor's degree in Psychology. The college I went to offers a second-degree BSN program for people that already have a bachelor's. I have an MIP (minor in possession of alcohol) conviction from age 18 and a DUI from age 19. I consulted lawyers and in my state there is NO possibility of expungement so I will have these convictions on my record for life. I want to honestly know if I could get hired with a DUI or if I am wasting my time. Thanks.[View Answers]

How hard is the RN program?0Debre Rolon2012-11-03 16:39:52
I have been thinking of switching from my Sonography major to RN lately &was wondering how difficult are the actual nursing classes? I have completed almost all my pre-reqs except for medical terminology &a psychology class that I am currently taking. I have done good in my pre-reqs (mainly B's, 2 or 3 A's, and 2 C's) but am really worried if I can handle the program. I have heard people stressing about the nursing but they graduated. If I switch to RN, I will be getting my associate's degree in Nursing at a community college &then getting a BSN at a local university. Can any current RN students or RN's please give me an idea of how difficult the classes are? Any advice for to get through the program? From RN's already working in a hospital, how do you remember everything you learn in college or do you learn more hands on when you are hired? Thank you in advance for any advice! :))[View Answers]
2.9 GPA Psy switch to Int'l Relations Grad School?0teeka2012-11-03 13:20:40
UCLA 2008 psychology graduate with 2.9 GPA. Reason for low GPA - personal issues &just lost the heart for it. No International Relations (IR) academic or professional background - but found passion for it. Haven't taken GRE. Would like to attend Boston University among other schools. What are my chances? How high of a GRE score do I need to offset low GPA? From what I've read, people have said that one could take classes to increase GPA even after graduating - is that true? Would that be through extension schools, community colleges, accredited universities (even if the student is not a part of a program) - so just taking IR classes or actual post-bacc programs? As far as the Universities accepting post bacc classes - do they all do so or does it depend on the school? Advice on what I can do to be a more competitive candidate? If the GRE is taken by a prospective student more than once - do they take the highest score or averages it out?[View Answers]
