Best animal behavior programs and internships?0gaga 100002012-11-03 01:45:44
I'm a college graduate looking to gain educational and research experience prior to applying to graduate school for animal studies. I'm not so much interested in animal husbandry as animal behavior &comparative psychology. I want a program that will be challenging (not JUST cleaning cages) and looks good in my application to grad school. I've already interned at a chimpanzee sanctuary. I think I would like experience working with dolphins. But any info on good, (legitimate!) animal studies programs in the US would be great.[View Answers]

Hi everyone...I am going to be a senior this year, and I'm kind of super lost about college admissions. I have presented all of my stats here, and anything would be helpful. How do I get teaching experience?0biggie2012-11-02 23:04:54
I am in the fourth year of a five year BA/MA degree program in psychology. I will be graduating in the Spring of 2012 with my MA, but, right now I do not even have my BA. I am hoping to take a year off from school and classes after I graduate before I apply to doctoral programs in cognitive psychology. I would love to be able to teach during that time-- I know that with an MA there has to be some teaching jobs available at junior colleges or some adjunct lecturer positions available at senior colleges. Unfortunately, I will not be able to build up my CV with formal teaching experiences until I get my BA... I am having trouble finding teaching assistant positions in my current state. At my school, they want people who have a BA but not an MA for TA positions, but someone with at least an MA and experience for adjunct positions. What kind of experience can I build in the next year that will help me get a job once I graduate?[View Answers]
If I want to eventually become a doctor, how much high school science should I take?0TiffanyJ2012-11-02 22:00:12
I'm a sophomore, but I already know it is my dream to be a doctor. I have taken more science courses than anyone else in my class of 400. I'm not super smart at every subject but I LOVE science, especially Biology. If I want to major in Biology in college, and then eventually apply to Med school, how much of a base should I build up now? The classes I have taken/will take in high school: Pre-Ap Earth Science (required) Pre-Ap Biology General Chemistry Genetics Human Anatomy &Physiology 1 &2 AP Biology AP Environmental Science AP Psychology (I know this isn't a full on science class) and a college half day medical program everyday in which you recieve college credit and graduate already a registrered nurses assistant. Do you think this is good? I am still taking other classes though, like government and philosophy and other required courses. Any advice from Doctors out there? :)[View Answers]
What are some colleges with good, well known Theatre and Psychology programs?0Mark Jessen2012-11-02 21:56:11
I plan on majoring in Theatre and Psychology when I go to college, and I'd like to apply for a few more than the ones I already have. Does anyone know of some good colleges worth applying to? Particularly any with good Theatre and Psychology? I live in East Tennessee, but I don't have to go to college nearby, so it doesn't matter what state it is in. Any recommendations are appreciated :) P.s. I'm looking for college suggestions, not criticisms for my choice in majors[View Answers]
Universities in the UK - long.?0Jamielah2012-11-02 21:41:53
It's probably a little too early to be asking this question as I've got 2 years to go before it's time to start looking for a University ideally, but I'd like to know about the best Universities that offer the course I'd like to study. I'll give a little insight into what I'd like to do as a career to start with :) From being a young age, I wanted to be a police officer but put off the idea when I started doing Media at secondary school. From that point, my paths careered from being a movie trailer maker, a journalist &a director, but I've gone back to the police officer idea. I opted to study Psychology, Philosophy, English &Sociology at college. I'd like to go onto a specialised area of the police force - this being dog handling so I hoped that psychology would better my chances of getting into this field because of the background. I want to study animal behaviour at University because I think this would also help me in the dog handling field, should I get into it ( i know it's a difficult field to get into, much like the mounted area which would be another choice.) I don't know why but I quite like Manchester, so after my first bout of researching I was relieved when Manchester Metropolitan showed the only animal behaviour course, instead of behavioural science which was what was coming up at other Universities. I set my heart on going there, then working around Manchester. I'm from Scunthorpe so this would be a very big jump &no doubt very scary but I was willing to take the chance. I did a bit more research today &found that an A-Level in Science, preferably biology, but I expected this. Luckily, I have a C in science, &biology is my strongest scientific subject so that's not all that bad, but that now means I could quite possibly have to change my choice of college courses. The Universities that stood out today are Buckinghamshire, MMU again, &the University of Wolverhampton, purely because of the entry requirements. The course description at Buckinghamshire was "The programme is designed for students to obtain a wide knowledge of animal behavioural assessment, training techniques &welfare legislation of both domestic &feral animals" which stood out even further for me, purely because of the "training techniques" because this would help me a great deal, what with the training required with police dogs. I've hit a rock at the moment &I really don't know where to take it from here. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, &sorry this is so long. n_n Shraii x[View Answers]

How much college does it take to be a school psychologist?0Hazel :)2012-11-02 20:34:14
I saw this on a website: "School psychologists are highly trained in both psychology and education. They must complete a minimum of a Specialist-level degree program (60 graduate semester credits) that includes a 1200-hour internship" How many years in college is that? I don't know how to put that in perspective. Also, does it depend on whether it is a elementary, middle, high school, etc.?[View Answers]

Advice for Studying Abroad in the UK?0Skyshun2012-11-02 17:35:07
I'm going to be a college freshman in the Fall and I've always wanted to study abroad. I'm trying to do a little research now so that in a year I'll know exactly where I want to go. My college (UConn) has some programs with certain universities like University of Nottingham and University of Birmingham. But I don't know a single thing about these schools. I'd prefer not to study in London because it would be more expensive. I'm not a whiz kid either so Cambridge and Oxford are way out of my league. As of right now my major is Psychology but there's a good chance I'll change that. Any advice would be greatly appreciated (cost, best cities, work load, etc)[View Answers]

Advice: Looking to go to school outside of US?0 ミ ミ Weinaifengsuo -2012-11-02 17:11:26
Hi, I'm 16 and a junior in HS. I'm already actively searching for a college. I have no idea how America is going to look in the next five or six years and I'm not looking forward to it either. I'd love a challenge and a change of scene so I'm looking to go to school in Canada or, more idealistic, England. I'm planning to pursue a double-major in Music and Psychology, but at the moment, I'm thinking about having a backup plan and study in the field of technology (preferably working with tech support and computer programming) Anyways, I would love it if anyone could provide me with information about going overseas to school and what I need to do in the next two years in order to make moving out of the US not just some dream to get far away from home, but a set plan. Thanks in advance! :)[View Answers]
How to make up for a bad college year before grad school?0laila012012-11-02 17:04:46
2007 was a crappy year for me in college. My serious illness made me decide against going into a counseling program and dropped two classes in the Spring. I began an engineering program and ended up having to switch to sat/ unsat on 3 of my classes: diff eq, env. bio, and geochem. With all my wishy-washiness I will be graduating now in Fall 2008 instead of 2007. I want to finish my psychology program and then apply to grad programs for geology (i meet all the prereqs). I have one undergrad research project on uranium-thorium dating. Amazingly I still have a 3.2 and about 15 hours in geology courses. My GRE score is 540 verbal and 710 quan and 4.0 for writing. I could retake the courses I got unsats in, I could finish a chem minor, retake the gre, or I could devote time to a geology-related independent study project.[View Answers]
Can someone please edit my essay for social work?0caro2012-11-02 16:26:18
I wanted to become a social worker when I realized that Social Work is very similar to Psychology, my major in undergraduate school. Similar with the exception that it puts more emphasis on helping people find their strengths, rather than giving them a diagnosis and being predominantly problem-focused. My own experience in helping people with their problems, and enjoying it, influenced me to pursue a career in Social Work. Becoming a full professional with a graduate degree in Social Work represents the culmination of many years of personal and professional preparation. I have always enjoyed working people and helping them with their problems. At 34, I feel that I have the maturity necessary to perform at my best level once again, as a student. I also have a high level of motivation that accompanies my current position. I work with incarcerated youth who, by the way, are mostly minorities.I am deeply concerned by the explosive incarceration rates in America, specifically the way males lead the way in going to jail, rather than going to college, working, etc. I feel this sense of urgency makes me an excellent candidate for your Master's Program because I am so fully engaged at my place of employment. It is my sincere hope to be able to contribute to discussions of how to best counsel and care for at-risk youth. My research interest focuses on boys, especially those at risk for spending their young adulthood behind bars. I am currently working at Harbor View Adolescent Center. I am a Youth Counselor for incarcerated youth with behavioral and emotional problems in a residential treatment facility. In my job as a youth counselor, my primary work responsibility is to serve as a positive role model for adolescents aged twelve to eighteen. The residents have backgrounds of homelessness, and are also victims of physical and sexual abuse. Some of them were dealing with drug and alcohol abuse, depression, and juvenile justice system. At times, my job could be extremely stressful But I discovered that I had the ability to connect with the adolescents and develop strong emotional ties with them. I focused on helping them with their social skills, coping skills, and independent living skills. My main goal was to help them build their self-esteem and improve their sense of security. The adolescents that I worked with in the residential treatment facility Could get physically assaultive AT TIMES; throwing chairs and banging their heads on the doors. They would also exhibit self-harming behaviors. It was during these criTICAL situations that I would get stuck in knowing WHAT the best clinical approach WAS to use when they were self-harming. I would like to have better tools for helping these kids when they are in crisis and KNOW whether those interventions are well supported by the literature. I hope that, with the aid of a Master's Degree in Social Work, I CAN ACHIEVE that. I WANT TO be able to help my kids in THEIR TIME OF crisis and (OMITam at) TEACH them the necessary skills THEY WILL NEED TO transition into more independent WAY OF living. These youth need all the help and attention we can give them in order to fight recidivism, especially THE African- American and Hispanic males, who continuALLY come back into our system. If you were to grant me the privilege of studying in your program, I WOULD LIKE TO research the recidivisim rates of black and Hispanic juveniles and young adoLEscents. I WISH to contribute to our understanding of how we can best go about saving their lives and, at the same time, easE the financial burdens on our society.[View Answers]
