Do I have a shot in transferring to a UC campus as a psychology major?0Nic2012-11-05 22:27:02
Hi guys, I am wondering if someone can let me know where I stand for transferring to any of the University of California campuses? I have finished my freshmen year of college and have a 2.73 GPA with 30 units completed. For the most part, my transcript consists of A's (Art, English Comp,Abnormal Psych) and B's (General Psychology, Physical Science Lab, Honors English Critical Thinking/Comp) with a couple of C's (Pre-Calculus, Physical Science) and one D (General Biology). I have completed the seven course pattern that is part of the minimum UC transfer requirements for admission. I am planning on taking three classes this summer (two history, one music) for a total of 9 units. Hopefully, by the time I start my fall semester, I will have at least a 3.0 GPA. I am currently volunteering at a mental health clinic and am in the psychology club at my community college. I have taken some major preparation courses such as general psychology and abnormal psychology. This coming fall and spring, I am hoping to complete all my remaining lower division major courses, such as statistics and biological psychology. Please, can anyone let me know how I stack up to the competition for Fall 2013 admission?[View Answers]
Starting college in a few months, question about job opportunities with psych major?0.zakiyya2012-11-05 16:42:54
I'm going to be a psychology major with a journalism minor. However I was talking to my dad last night and he said that someone suggested if I can't get into my own practice eventually, that I should consider joining my dad's company in the Human Resources dpt. I was wondering if I needed a different degree to go into HR or if psychology would be fine? Or should I minor in HR or something like that?[View Answers]
Psychology?0Lina2012-11-05 16:42:24
So I'm interested in psychology and am considering majoring in it for college. The problem is, I only want to go to school for a bachlor's degree, or maybe go 6 years, but then I'm worried I'll only be able to get a job teaching. What other jobs are available to a bachlor in psychology? Also, I know there are many branches and I'm thinking about child psychology or developmental. Something with therapy maybe?[View Answers]

Do you know anyone who has gotten into a Master's Program in International Relations without studying abroad?0Michalea2012-11-05 16:20:54
I am getting my BA in Psychology, but want to go in a different direction for my masters. I am mainly considering MPAs because I eventually want to work in government/with an agency, and I feel like I can probably get accepted even with a BA in Psychology. However, my main interest is in International Relations. The problem is that I was financially unable to study abroad. Applying to IR programsis tempting for me, but doing that means that I would have to choose between programs at the same schools. I attend a fairly pricey private college (35k/year) on nearly full scholarship, but the intl scholarships available still required me to pay $2000-3000 out of pocket to study abroad. That would have essentially meant that my mother had no lights and no food. Even with jobs, as a full time student also supporting my disabled mother - I was unable to even afford a plane ticket. Have you heard of anyone getting into a program like this WITHOUT international experience? Should I just go for the MPA and give up on it for a while? My GPA is 3.7 out of 4.0 and as this is my last year, I expect to top out at 3.8. Advice?[View Answers]
Should I take my Bachelor's degree in Psychology online or on-campus (University of Phoenix; Florida)?0Jezebel2012-11-05 16:10:12
I go to the University of Phoenix and I took my two years (for my Associate's degree) online. Which I was fine with since it was more generalized classes. However, I'm going for my Bachelor's now and the program is completely psychology courses, obviously. But I'm undecided on whether I should continue online or go to campus. Problem is the closest campus (that is providing the program at the moment) is 3 buses away from me. Quite a long journey there. I'm visiting tomorrow to see how long it takes me to actually get there and to finalize my decision. But I'm still unsure if it's worth the sacrifice. I don't like the idea of working in "teams". That makes me uncomfortable. I'm more of an independent learner, so in honesty that's my biggest concern apart from the distance. So what do you all think? Is it worth it or should I just stick online? I like the idea of on-campus because I gain a little extra knowledge from the feedback from others, but still. Thanks![View Answers]

I'm going into 12th grade, and here's a little background on my academic career. *3.89 GPA *taken/taking all the advanced classes my high school offers Comp 101 PreCal and a couple college classes (Psychology, American Culture) *my school doesn't offer German so I'm taking it during the summer/around my regular classes from BYU online. #2 in my class *All A+'s except 1 B (math only) *regular community service hours/church volunteer hours (VBS, Sunday School, etc.) *full time job at a Nursing home 40 hrs/week during the summer, and about 15hrs/week during the school year on campus *top 3% of my class *sophomore class secretary -not really a big deal i know. * participated in our schools only exchange program sophomore year to Austria *going on 4 years on a Performing Arts team at school. *my SATs weren't stellar 1690, and 27 ACT but I'm studying all summer to improve my SAT's I want to major in history and hopefully either work in a Holocaust museum or teach at the university level once I get my PhD. What are my chances at these type of liberal arts schools?[View Answers]
Does the subject you earned your Bachelor's degree in, need to be the same as the Ph.D program you apply to?0Agatha2012-11-05 15:42:54
I had a question, that many times people will get apply for a Ph.D program right after getting their Bachelors, but is it a must to that whatever your Bachelors' subject is, is the same subject you wanna pursue for your Ph.D. For example, do most Ph.D programs work where, "I have a B.A. in Psychology, therefore I have a strong chance in getting into the Ph.D Psychology program than non-B.A. Psych majors?" Or can a person have a B.A. in Sociology and somehow still be accepted to a Ph.D program in Psychology? Do most programs work in a certain way? I'd appreciate any insight or advice, thanks! P.S. I'm actually an undergraduate Poli Sci/Ethnic Studies double major hoping to apply for a Ph.D program in Sociology, my ultimate hope is to be a professor. Hope that helps. Peace.[View Answers]
John Hopkins medical school?0Alexi Angela2012-11-05 15:41:42
I am from the UK and am a mature student about to start freshman year, I am going to medical school post grad with a degree in biomedical science (1 year placement), but should I aim this high? Will I have to take on some minors or even a double major? I was thinking of taking on psychology as a minor and maybe physics as well (if my university will let me). Will this be enough? Family matters forced me to become a high school drop out, so the only qualifications I have will be that which I have noted above, thanks for the help.[View Answers]

I'm having trouble deciding on a major in counseling and/or psychology or business?0kevin giordano2012-11-05 15:08:53
I'm currently a community college student that is having difficulty deciding on what to major in/do for a career. I want a lot of opportunities for jobs, but I also want the ability to help people. I also want to live a decent life with a nice house and be able to provide for my family without fear of losing my job or having trouble finding one to begin with. I've narrowed it down to counseling, psychology, and business. Counseling appeals to me because I can help people and there are different avenues I can take, psychology appeals to me because I am good at the classes I take and can help people too, but fear that testing gets in the way of actual psychotherapy, and business appeals to me the least of the three but I was always good at it in high school. If anyone has any suggestions, they are definitely appreciated.[View Answers]
How hard is it to switch your major to nursing?0Donnice2012-11-05 15:05:38
I know it's relatively easy to switch majors and many people do it, but I'm wondering if nursing's different because it's a separate program. As of right now I applied to colleges as a psychology major and I'm still flip flopping between majoring in psychology and majoring in nursing, but I applied as a psychology major because nursing programs are more selective and harder to get into. I'm worried that, if I want to change my major once I'm in school, I won't get into the nursing program at the school I'm already attending. Is it still hard to get into the nursing program once you're already at that school? Will they really deny someone who has decent grades?[View Answers]

It was three weeks long, where I took AP Govt, met senators and debated current issues. Volunteered for local hospital as a licensed pharmacy assistant and delivered medications to patients. I worked since last feb. as a staff writer in news/ reporter for the Eastern Washington University newspaper, and started this at 16 years old. My boss doesn't know how old I am. I will continue this job next year. I just completed a surgeon job shadow at Sacred Heart Medical Center. There were 50 applicants, 4 were chosen, and I miraculously got in somehow. lol. That was very cool. I was also accepted into the Yale University Junior State program two weeks from now...I am awaiting word from my parents as to whether or not I can go this year. >< Worked as a library intern the summer before last. I am going to write a book this summer. EC's: Cross country sophomore year Ballet Violinist in Orchestra (at University too) Volunteering Job hopefully Junior State of America (well, only for one year :) ) Hope to do a really cool senior project involving my Columbia University physics professor and biology. Staff Writer/reporter for The Easterner Don't have my SAT I results yet. I will retake it in October. I have a bad feeling about it though....): Here comes the bad part...my GPA is only a 3.52 at this point. I will work very hard to raise it. IT'S GOING UP. I'm a perfectionist, but I don't want to set myself up for failure. Please let me know if I can get into a top school, or if I just be realistic and start looking at state colleges. I just took the SAT but I wasn't in tiptop shape (family problems before it--didn't study, it was only a dry run), and I got an 1880. I know that's really low for the schools I want. However, I know that I can raise my score; I want at least a 2100, and I'm studying over the summer. P.S. I am a white female.[View Answers]
