I am currently a Senior at FIU and will be graduating in May 2010 with my BA in Psychology. I was considering UF(Florida), FSU(Florida State), UCF(Central Florida), NSU (Nova South Eastern), &FIU. Does anyone know the requirements for these schools (deadline for application) Do they have masters program or just a phd? Also, any other schools you may suggest (in florida preferably, or close by)?[View Answers]
How do I write my resume if I attended two undergraduate colleges?0Burges2012-11-06 06:08:07
I attended one university for a year and a half, under the Biology major. I transferred schools, and graduated from the second university under the Psychology major with a Biology minor. On my resume, should I put that I attended the first school under one major, and that i graduated from the second school under another major? Help![View Answers]
Should I stay in school longer to double major?0Prp2012-11-06 06:04:06
I am wrapping up my biology major in about one or two more semesters. I have come to the conclusion that this was probably the wrong major choice and don't have much interest in pursuing the field once i graduate. I think I want to get into counseling or helping people in a non-hospital setting. My main problem is that I only have a vague idea of where i want to go... and have no experience in those fields. I have been contemplating adding a minor, which i think I will. Most likely in psychology. This may set me back a semester at most, but I can complete those classes at a community college. I am going to a guidance counselor at my school next week, but would just like some opinions: Do you think staying in school maybe another year or year and a half (I've been in school for four years now) and double-majoring is a good option? I would probably double major in psyc or a related discipline.[View Answers]
Can't decide career path?0Happy Labor Day!!!!2012-11-06 06:03:34
I have started the process of looking into graduate programs (I'm in my third year of undergrad) and I am having trouble deciding which career path I want to start. My undergrad degree will be in psychology, with a minor in political science. I am really interested in two fields of psychology: counseling and school psychology. I really like working with children/adolescents and that's what draws me to school psychology. But I also don't want to limit myself to just this age group or to just a school setting. People have told me that if I get a masters/doctorate in counseling, I can still be a counselor within a school setting. But school psychology covers more than just counseling. Basically, if anyone in either of these fields can give me a little guidance it would be greatly appreciated!!![View Answers]
Do you think it's worth it? ?0Holly2012-11-06 05:57:21
Okay, here's my story: I am 26 years old. I gratuated two years ago with a BS in psychology. I never really wanted to do anything with psych, I just wanted a degree, so thats what I went with, since it does interest me. I ended up working for the railroad, which pays well, but just isnt what I dreamed of doing with my life. So, I decided to go back to college. I decided to go into pharmacy. My best friend just graduated from pharmacy school and now gets 120,000/year. Now, money isnt everything, I know this..but it sure does help. So, I have to go to a private college that costs 26,000/year. I have 6 more years of school left, but will end up with a BS in chemistry (while getting prepharm stuff done) and a PharmD. Having been to school once, I have exhausted all stafford loans, so Ive had to go to private loans. The interest rate is insane, and even though I plan on paying on them throughout school, its still a SUBSTANTIAL amount of money. And its a long time...Im already 26, so Ill be 33 by the time I get done. Do you think its worth it? Im not happy in my current job, but I dont know what else to do. Any advice?[View Answers]

Question about graduate school specializations?0Danni2012-11-06 05:39:59
I was wondering if your graduate school concentration or major I guess you might call it necessarily has to match your undergraduate major. Right now, I am a psychology major with a minor in mathematics and I'm planning on going to graduate school, hopefully to become a professor. I would rather go to graduate school for mathematics as opposed to psychology, but I'm not sure if I can since it's only my minor. I have taken many math courses, anywhere from calculus and trigonometry to complex real analysis and applied combinatorics, so I feel that I would be well-prepared for a grad program in math, but Im almost apprehensive even to apply with the degree in psychology I will receive. Just for background information, I've considered going for a double-major in psychology and math, but i don't have the time at this point since I only picked up math during my sophomore year. I will without a doubt be able to finish the minor though. Can I still apply to a grad program in math with my current degree path? Thanks.[View Answers]
What field should I major in/what college should I go to?0dharmendra2012-11-06 05:39:07
I know I want to major in something involving mental health. As in, I want to help treat and rehabilitate people with various mental disorders I'm not sure exactly what field I should be looking into, psychology or psychiatry (and more specifically what area should I go into within one of those fields)? I also have no idea where to even begin in picking a college that has a great department in this field. (I was hoping to have my minor in Philosophy as well, if that could narrow the field any...) My GPA is up and down between about a 3.0 &3.5 (so let's say 3.25). I've yet to take my ACT/SAT (I'm only a Sophomore), but my projected score for the ACT is 26-31. I want to start figuring all this out before Junior year so I can begin planning my next two years of classes accordingly, and busting my butt to try and get into whatever school I set my sights on. Thanks in advance for any suggestions![View Answers]
My chances to a good pre-med college?0Jessica Jenkins2012-11-06 05:33:02
Well, I'm going into my senior year now, so I thought I'd ask this. I have an SAT score of 2010, a weighted GPA of about 3.0. This year I took AP Biology and AP psychology, and next year I'm taking AP Calculus AB. Since 7th grade I've completed 80 hours of community service, with another 20 in my senior year, making 100 hours. I go to a college prep school that's well known in the area with colleges. The only thing I'm worried about is the GPA, since it isn't the best. But my main question is, what are some good colleges with medical programs in the area a little bit north of UCSD (San Diego), and what are my chances to get into them? I would try UCSD, but apparently 2010 is just an average SAT score there, my GPA isn't, and it's a bit far from where I want to be. I can't afford a college much more than $25,000 a year, since even with financial aid I don't have all that much money, but I still want to go to the best I can. Any suggestions?[View Answers]
Which college do you think is better? University of Maine in Farmington OR University of Southern Maine?0Ingrid2012-11-06 05:28:47
I'm from Vermont, but I want to attend college in Maine. I'm a junior so I have some time to reach a final decision. There's two colleges in Maine that really interest me: University of Maine in Farmington and University of Southern Maine. And there's two career options that really interest me: Psychology and Pre-Med. If I choose to major in psych is one of the colleges that I named have a better program than the other? What about for pre-med? If there's anyone who has attended either of these schools or is in enrolled in one of them right now, could you tell me a bit about what you like about it? I'm going to visit each of these colleges within the next couple of months. I'm going to Farmington in less than two weeks. I just want to know what I should expect on campus and such. Thanks for answering!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!![View Answers]

I'm 32 and I have a bachelors in History and another one in Religion with a minor in psychology. I work in a call center which I hate. My GPA from college is 2.5 becausse i did bad my first two years with 'd' averages and then 3.3 the last few years. I don't know if I can get accepted into a grad school program. Also, I can't take anymore undergrad classes because I reached my limit on what I can borrow as an undergrad student. What should I do? I work a full and part time job now but neither of these are 'careers or could lead to one at the current company I'm at'. My favorite subjects are Psycholoyg and History and I'm interested in Religion and Mythology as well. I'm an INFP myers briggs. I never thought I'd wind up with this crappy of a life at my age. I have a lot of questions about college, but no one seems to be able to answer them?0Chuck2012-11-06 05:18:59
Like, seriously, when you look something up on google, you're only getting limited information. I'm interested to know the type of things you can do with biology and psychology degrees, and I've tried searching them a bunch of times, but nothing's really helping me. I've heard that one of the ways to find out about something is to ask someone who actually knows. Yeah, I know that sounds kind of redundant... But someone who actually knows, for example, like a professor at a college or something. I'm not really interested in being a counselor, or med school, or working in a lab or anything like that. I don't like business or things like that, either. I am really interested in certain aspects of psychology, but I don't know what I'd do with it...[View Answers]
Would anyone care to review my personal statement?0toyhier2012-11-06 05:03:22
I want to go to University in September (Anglia Ruskin to be specific, 240 points) and this is my personal statement! I want to do Psychology Bsc (hons). Soooo yeah, this is my first draft, please be as harsh as possible, i want to get it the best it can be! Thank you! x ------ My deep interest in psychological studies sprung from an early age, by reading a range of books, my main influence surprisingly geared towards entertainment. The book in question was “Tricks of the Mind”, authored by Derren Brown. I realise this may seem a bit silly, yet in this book he wrote about the study of the mind, how he took psychology at University and loved it. It also gave me an elemental understanding of basic human behaviour, attachments, rapport and even suggestibility. This whole area seemed like an exciting delve into understanding functions, knowing how we work and what secrets of daily life are revealed through the tangled jungle of the human mind. This has carried on fascinating me through to this day. I believe my life experiences, even at this young age, make me an ideal candidate for a degree, and later on a career in psychology. My previous employment has taught me many skills not only for the course, yet also for life, Discipline, patience and punctuality just to name a few. I started work at the age of 15 in a restaurant and café area at Bewl Water Reservoir, This included working in many roles there, but mostly serving food and handling money at the front of house. This is around the time I started to gain an interest in psychology, I found observing customers behaviour fascinating! I began to read up on human behaviour on the internet in order to see patterns in the customers. My boss here was what you could call… Strict, she would usually manage to fire at least 1 person a fortnight. I managed to stay here for over a year under this management and I consider that a great achievement! My boss eventually got outbid on the lease to the restaurant so I decided to move on. I now work at the supermarket, The Co-operative. I feel my range of employment has taught me many transferable skills to proudly bring into a university lifestyle. working in sociable jobs focused around people, makes me a perfect candidate to study such a people based course, as I have had so much practise dealing with differing situations in differing roles, I very much enjoy getting involved in the schools activities and helping spread a good word. I found myself getting involved in speeches and really enjoyed it, something many have trouble with; I grew to love! I eventually decided to apply to become a prefect at Angley, in order to, not only help the inner school workings, but also the whole reputation around the wider community, which I feel is very important being based in such a rural area of Kent. After my degree, I plan to stay on in full time education and progress to a masters degree, maybe to become a psychology teacher, or simply branch out into a more specific area of expertise, such as an occupational psychologist. The research aspect also looks very appealing, the ability to create world leading data and changing the way human-kind thinks is mindblowing! And with my commitment and passion to everything psychology, I think this is a real-life possibility.[View Answers]

Is UC San Diego really THAT superior in experimental Psychology compared to other UC universities?0PHYSICS.....confused2012-11-06 04:52:24
Whenever I look for Psychology department rankings in the Internet, UCSD shows up for experimental psychology, but the overall ranking is relatively low compared to Berkley, UCLA and co. I wanted to study experimental psychology, but I wanted to attend to the UCLA, is the difference really that big? Is it worth it to attend to SN instead? I just felt that UCLA has more prestige/reputation and since I live in Santa Monica, it is a lot closer, but ultimately, career comes first. Any advices? Thanks in advance![View Answers]
