What type of master's degree will I benefit from if I plan to build schools in a third world country.?0blah2012-11-06 00:40:00
I have a bachelors in psychology and education. I am interested in getting my masters degree in an area that will help guide me towards my goal of opening up schools in developing countries. Does anyone know of any workshops, leadership courses or have any direction I can take at this point. I will be volunteering next year, but in the meantime, I would love to get more information or direction on how I can educate myself on the process. Thanks for any suggestions![View Answers]
Psychology or biology major to get into med school?0Shalea2012-11-06 00:36:22
I want to be a child psychiatrist. My university offers a Psychology major with a specialization in Child Behavior, but in order to take all of the pre-requisites for med school I would have no credits left to complete a minor in anything without taking more time to graduate. I'd be a board certified behavior analyst and have clinical field experience in Psychology, though. Whereas, if I became a Biology major, I would fulfill the pre-requisites and research and have credit space for a double minor (I'm thinking I'd pick psychology and philosophy). I'm sort of obsessed with Psychology and it's probably slightly easier to get a higher GPA in it, but the Biology major would have more room for well-roundedness. I have no problem with majoring in Biology as I love the subject too. Which would do better in admissions/on the MCAT? Thank you![View Answers]
What should I pair with a bachelor degree in Psychology?0Toya2012-11-06 00:32:20
I need to settle on another degree to pair with psychology. I don't know if I want to do biology because I dread taking organic chemistry and I don't want to work in a lab on a day-to-day basis. I was thinking information technology specializing in programming but I don't know if I like to type thousands of line of codes. I guess I need this other degree to be the backup plan in case psychology do not get me a job. Any ideas? ps. I am planning on going to graduate school either way.[View Answers]
Does where you go to get your undergraduate degree affect your value in the job market?0Korrina2012-11-06 00:27:42
i live in jacksonville, florida, and i'm going to a community college right now. i'm going to be graduating soon and transferring to a university. i plan to apply at ucf, fsu, usf, and maybe uf. i'm not ruling out unf here in jacksonville just yet. i am a psychology major. i want my masters or higher. after i get my bachelor's, i'll work to help me get through grad school if what is saved and set away for college by my parents is not enough. ucf and usf are large schools with excellent ratings that i would love to go to. unf is a small school with relatively bad ratings and reviews, but it's here at home, and i do like it here. uf and fsu are thought of as the more prestigious schools in florida. just because of the name, will it be an advantage after i receive my bachelors? will getting my bachelors at any of the said colleges be different from getting it at another? i was told that your post-grad degrees and where you get them from is where it really matters, is that true?[View Answers]

What are the pro's and con's of a PsyD in Clinical Psychology vs a M.S.W. with a L.C.S.W?0sloth2012-11-06 00:22:50
I'm coming up on my senior year, I'm getting a B.S. with a minor in Psych. I really want to work with mental health, preferably in my own practice. I know its 5 years for the PsyD and at least 100k. The M.S.W is only 2 years (plus an extra 1 1/2 or so for the L.C.S.W) and about 40k. I'm going to be 22 when I start these programs and I want to be able to settle down and AFFORD kids. 100k and 5 years is a LOT of commitment, especialy when most PsyDs dont come with 20k research internships. So far all I have found is some 4k clinical internships. I want to counsel people, to work with their anxiety and self esteem, to be able to diagnose and create treatment plans. And I'm certainly not opposed to working in group or clinic settings. I'm terribly worried about paying for college, i'm terrible at scholarship writing and my parents make enough money to limit financial aid, but they certainly are not going to pay for it. I'm so unsure as to which program to choose. M.S.W. certainly seems quicker and cheaper, but will it allow me to do what I want? I'd love the opinions of any M.S.W.s or PsyDs. How did you make your decision?[View Answers]

Why can't you get a Child Psych and Psych degree?0Jelani2012-11-06 00:04:40
Why can't you get a double-major in Psychology and Child Psychology? This might not apply to every college, but I looked at the academics for U of Minnesota and under the psychology B.A. curriculum is says "Students completing the degree program in psychology may not receive a second degree or a second major in child psychology." Does anybody know the rationale behind this policy? I don't see any reason for it- it can't be an issue of money because only two courses overlap between the Psych curriculum and the Child Psych curriculum. In any case, is there any college that does allow you to double major in Psych and Child Psych? (Preferably near Minnesota). Check it out- http://onestop2.umn.edu/programCatalog/v…[View Answers]

Here are the courses that I've taken so far: Freshman year - Pre- AP Biology, Pre-AP English, Pre-AP World History, P.E., Latin 1, Art 1, Pre-AP Algebra 1 **Pre-AP was the highest level class that was offered for both freshmen and sophomores** Sophomore year - Pre-AP Geometry, Psychology, Pre-AP U.S. History, Pre-AP Chemistry, Pre-AP Algebra 2 with Trig., Latin 2, Pre-AP English **I doubled up on math so I could get to calculus by senior year. I chose it as an elective. I also took zero period drivers ed./health before school.** Junior year - AP Chemistry (double period), AP U.S. History, AP English, Pre-AP Pre-Calculus, Bio-Med, Personal Finance **Pre-AP Pre-Calculus was all that was offered. There was so AP.** Extra-curricular/school involvement: - I am a member of the youth board for my school's foundation - I am an ambassador for the school - I have helped with the boys's soccer team - I help with my school's Life Skills Academy, which is the special ed. What do I do with my life?0Asley2012-11-05 23:51:25
Alright, I realize this question is a little out there but I really don't know what to do with myself. I am 23 years old, graduated high school in 05 and am still trying to figure out what I want to do as far as school and career fields. I am interested in a lot of stuff, mainly stuff like computers, electronics, machinery, alternative energy sources, the NASA program and just space itself, natural environments, philosophy, psychology, music...etc. I have tried different college majors and still feel like I am wasting my time and talent! How do I make a career out of something like this? And most importantly, how do I make a good career out of something like this...one where I don't have to travel somewhere all over the world, and where I can settle down and create a family of my own, but I also want to stay around my existing family and be able to enjoy them as well. I know I would like to make a difference in this lifetime, I just dont know how to do it, I have tried school, thought of many many different career fields, and Im just not happy...anybody have any ideas out there? I would greatly appreciate real input on this. How about any ideas on how I can make it in North Eastern PA without selling my soul to the devil??[View Answers]

Should I apply for counseling psy Psy.D then transfer?0Conder2012-11-05 23:07:54
I want to get my doctorate and I'm trying to narrow down which schools I would like to apply to. An adviser told me I wouldn't get into any clinical Ph.D. programs and that I should instead apply for counseling psychology Ph.D. programs. What I really want is to get into a good Psy.D. program, but I also fear that I wont get into any of these clinical programs as well. Should I apply for a less competitive concentration and then hope to transfer in after proving I can get the grades? Are you aloud to transfer concentrations within schools?[View Answers]
