B.F.Skinner(Burrhus Frederic Skinner)was born March 20, 1904, in the small Pennsylvania town of Susquehanna. His father was a lawyer, and his mother a strong and intelligent housewife. His upbringing was old-fashioned and hard-working. Burrhus was an active, unconstrained boy who enjoyed the outdoors. His cultivation was of the old ways and hard working. The tragic point of his childhood life was the death of his brother at the age of 16 of a cerebral aneurysm. Burrhus attended Hamilton College in upstate New York. He didnt fit in very well, not enjoying the fraternity parties or the football games. To make things worse, Burrhus was an atheist at a school that required daily chapel attendance. He wanted to be a writer and got his BA in english. After some traveling, he decided to go back to school, this time at Harvard. He got his masters in psychology in 1930 and his doctorate in 1931, and stayed there to do research until 1936. Burrhus said "I had apparently failed as a writer, but was it not possible that literature had failed me as a method?" in his autobiography: Particulars of my life. In 1936, Burrhus moved to Minneapolis to teach at the University of Minnesota. There he met and soon married Yvonne Blue, they had two daughters. In 1945, he became the chairman of the psychology department at Indiana University. In 1948, he was invited to come to Harvard, where he remained for the rest of his life. He was a very active man, doing research and guiding hundreds of doctoral candidates as well as writing many books. While not successful as a writer of fiction and poetry, he became one of our best psychology writers, including the book Walden II, which is a fictional account of a community run by his behaviorist principles. He became one of the leaders of behaviorism and his work contributed immensely to experimental psychology. He also invented the 'Skinner box,' in which a rat learns to obtain food by pressing a lever. B.F. Skinner also invented the "baby tender." It is important to note that the baby tender is not the same as the "Skinner box," which was used in Skinner's experimental research. He created the enclosed heated crib with a plexiglass window in response to his wife's request for a safer alternative to traditional cribs. B.F. Skinner is famous for his research on operant conditioning and negative reinforcement. He developed a device called the "cumulative recorder," which showed rates of responding as a sloped line. Using this device, he found that behavior did not depend on the preceding stimulus as Watson and Pavlov maintained. Instead, Skinner found that behaviors were dependent upon what happens after the response. Skinner called this operant behavior. Skinner's observation of the effectiveness of incremental training of animals led him to formulate the principles of programmed instruction for human students. For over two decades skinner worked on his book Verbal Behavior. In a fundamental sense, it was an intensive analysis of 'man thinking' and social behaviour. It extended his behaviourist position to the most difficult domains of human activity and aroused considerable controversy. The book is almost entirely theoretical, involving little experimental research in the work itself. Skinner received numerous awards in his life time. He received the National Medal of Science from President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968. The National Medal of Science is an honor bestowed by the President of the science and engineering who have made important contributions to the advancement of knowledge in the fields of behavioral and social sciences, biology, chemistry, engineering, mathematics and physics. Three years later, he received the Gold Medal of the American Psychological Foundation, in which was given to recognize life achievement in and enduring contributions to psychology. In 1972 he was given the Humanist of the Year Award of the American Humanist Association. This award was established to recognize a person of national or international reputation who, through the application of humanist values, has made a significant contribution to the improvement of the human condition. Just eight days before his death, he received the first Citation for Outstanding Lifetime Contribution to Psychology by the American Psychological Association in 1990. B.F.Skinner was was a highly influential American psychologist, author, inventor, advocate for social reform. Skinner gave a new aspect to behavorism that has outstanding contribution to psycholgy and humanity as a whole. B.F.Skinner has and will always be one of the most brilliant American psychologist and an influential exponent of behaviourism.[View Answers]
I can't have a part time job while I'm at college. How can I make money?0Nico2012-11-05 05:32:13
I'm a full time student at university (I take the maximum 18 credits every semester) and I am graduating in a year and a half. My parents and I both agree that I should not have a job during the school year because I need to maintain a 3.8 GPA to go on to grad school in the psychology field. At my school, the only students who can work on campus are those students in the work study federal loan program, which I am not in, so a 10 hr/week on-campus job is not possible unfortunately. The thing is, I have to pay for everything... text books, rent, cable, and electric at my apartment, and food so making some kind of money would be really ideal. How do I do it without a job though? What can I do? I thought about tutoring, but again, that's an on-campus job for work study students :\[View Answers]
Chances of getting into top colleges?0Keri Ann2012-11-05 05:23:59
My dream school is Duke, so that's my #1. I'm planning on applying to Georgetown, Northwestern and UPenn too. University of Maryland is my backup school, I'm pretty confident I'll get in.. but what are my chances of getting a FULL ride? A lot of the seniors from my high school are hearing back, and I know 4 people who've already been offered full rides from Maryland. I go to a science math, computer science/ engineering magnet high school. We ranked #60 on Newsweek's top 100. I don't know my class rank, but it won't be very high. I think there's 330 in my graduating class. 50 other kids are in my program (we all applied in 8th grade, being selected out of 600 students that applied from across the county) and theres 2 other magnet programs, but they're not as rigorous. THere's like 200 magnet kids out of my class of 330. If I were to guess, my class rank would be at 60/330. Which sucks, but more than half of the 330 is magnet. I'm currently a sophomore. I know my stats are pretty low for top colleges/ivy league, but my schools' really stressful. I have to get up at 5:30 in the morning, the bus ride is 40 minutes, I take 8 classes a day, a mandatory study hall, don't get home until 5 PM... I usually get 5 or 6 hours of sleep. It's kind of overwhelming, so that's why I'm not making the best grades. Unweighted GPA = 3.77 Weighted GPA = 4.48 PSAT scores from the beginning of 10th grade = 202 I'll be taking a SAT prep course this summer. I plan to take the Math 2 SAT subject test this june, the bio sat subject test and the spanish subject test next year. 9th grade classes: Hon U.S. history Hon english Spanish 2 Phys ed Magnet precalculus AB (we have a weird math system because of the magnet program) Fundamentals of Computer Science Research and experimentation Magnet Physics (full course taken in 1 semester) Magnet Chemistry (full course taken in 1 semester) 10th grade classes: Magnet biology Magnet earth &space science Algorithms &Data Structures (java) Principles of Engineering Hon Spanish 3 Hon english Magnet precalc c/ functions b (precal abc, 3 semesters, is basically alg2+precalc. functions b is random units from calculars and multivar calculus that my math teacher decides to teach us) AP Government My plan for 11th grade: AP language and composition AP World history AP BC Calc Cell Physiology (1 sem) Biochemistry (1 sem + take the AP bio exam) Research and Design/ Senior Research Project A (we're all supposed to do an intership the summer between junior and senior year at a science institution. most people do them at the university. I'm hoping to do it at NIH or NIST, if they'll accept me. every year at least 1 kid from our program does it at NIH, at least 2 do it at NIST) Hon Spanish 4 AP Statistics Marine Biology (1 sem) Analytical chemistry (1 sem) My plan for 12th grade: AP literature AP Multivariable Calc Genetics Anatomy &Physiology Senior Research Project B (1 sem) Band/music composition&theory/ chorus (I haven't decided which i'll take) AP Spanish Language AP Psychology I have an empty spot for 1 semester. I don't know if I'll take an 8th class in 2nd semester. I think I want to just have 7 classes 2nd semester of senior year. Volunteer hours: 220 I volunteer at saturday school for elementary kids. Extracurriculars: 9th grade: webmaster's club 10th grade: interact club (fundraising), it's academic, MD envirothon I'll do more in 11th and 12th grade. I know I need to. I plan to do a summer program sponsored by howard hughes medical institution @ the university of maryland. I'm applying right now, and hopefully will get accepted. I already mentioned, I'll be doing an biomedical research internship between junior and senior year. I'll be taking the Math level 2 SAT subject test this june. I heard it's pretty easy (compared to my math class) so I'm anticipating 750+, hopefully 800. I'll take the biology SAT subject test next year. I'll take the spanish SAT subject test either next year or senior year. I really want to apply to Duke, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, UPenn, Northwestern, Brown... UMD if I don't get into any of these schools. Am I shooting too high/unrealistically?[View Answers]
Should I bother completing my minors as well?0Shaniquwa2012-11-05 05:02:15
So, I'm currently triple majoring in Psychology, Sociology and Social Sciences. And I'm on track to complete a certificate in Leadership studies in Psychology, as well as a double minor in Cultural Anthropology and Women/Gender Studies. I decided I really wanted to take a class that conflicted with the final class I was going to take for my Cultural Anthropology minor. And I haven't officially worked my Women/Gender studies minor into my plan I want to into a Masters of Public Health program and become a Health Educator on a college campus. And in a way all of these are somewhat interrelated, but I was wondering if I should continue? Is it going to help me at this point even though I'm triple majoring and involved in on-campus activities?[View Answers]

Why can't I make any friends?0Sashaank2012-11-05 04:41:46
I'm a thirteen-year old girl, and, because this year is going to be my last year in middle school, I really wanted to make some friends in order to have some good memories of the time I spent in this school. I've tried being nice, and have read over twenty self-help books this year, but nothing seems to be working. Whenever I sense someone is sad or worried, I try to be nice and talk to them, and be as comforting as possible (depending on how open they are with the subject). They usually appreciate me for doing so, but end up ignoring me the day after. Even little details like maintaining eye contact when speaking, or simply greeting one by their first name I try to remember when communicating with others. This year, the only children that were "friendly" to me will ignore me and nod their head while I am speaking, but immediately ask, "Hey, can you repeat that again? I wasn't really paying attention." when I am finished. It feels so frustrating, considering that I always try to pay attention to them and offer proper responses, and talk about my problems as little as possible. In the end, we never have anything in common. The only "true" friend I had died in an apartment fire when I was five years old. Ever since I was about six or seven years old, I've had an obsession with torture and execution. Everyday, I would go to the library and research on the internet about this subject. I also became obsessed with cardiology in grade three, philosophy in grade four, psychology in grade six, and recently criminology. The only other thing that I really enjoy (or you could call a hobby) is classical music, which I've adored since I was three years old. My "friends" never want to chat casually about these things, and laugh at me for liking these subjects, and sometimes thought that I was emo and suicidal for the same reasons, saying to everyone they know that I was depressed, emo, etc. Anytime I've tried to contradict this theory of theirs failed miserably, and some boys would always stand behind my back and pretend to hump me, and throw trash at my head on the bus in school trips (then inform the teacher when I tell them to stop that I hit them), and constantly kick the seat behind me in class. I tried joining sports teams at school, but I never have the time to make the practise times. Other extracurricular activities that I join I get made fun for, saying that it's for "nerds" and "retards". Other sports outside of school my family doesn't have the money for. I also don't have many "brand-name" clothing because of financial reasons, and I end up wearing the same clothes for half a month (though I do wash them every other day). Some kids say that me always using formal speech makes me sound stuck-up. Should I also try hard to fix this? I learned English by watching news programs in first grade (my parents can't speak proper English) so it's really hard for me to change. I'll fix it though, if it really does affect others' perception of me. I'm sorry for writing such a long description; felt like I had to get a lot out of my chest. Thanks for any answers![View Answers]

What college?!?0Mick c2012-11-05 04:07:11
im 16 &beginning my college search. i used to always want to go to princeton, but now that im really looking into it, princeton doesnt seem to offer the majors im passionate about. im top of a class of about 150, will have taken approximately 12 ap classes by the time i graduate, have 400+ hours of community service, &do a lot of extracurricular activities. right now, i really want to write &direct films for my job. i used to think about being a lawyer or a doctor, but if i choose either of those careers, i may be successful, but never fulfilled or satisfied. i want to go to a great college because i know i have a good chance of getting in, but i want to go to college for filmmaking and screenplay writing. maybe even double in psychology- not because i want to be a psychologist but because the human mind interests me &can help me create influential movies. lol sorry for rambling, but basically what are top colleges that have great film programs(yale, stanford, columbia, etc??)[View Answers]

...preferably in Southern California but really anywhere there is a good program. I graduated early with my BA in Psychology, but interned in a mental health clinic &psychiatric ward and realized that psychiatric nursing seems to have much more flexibility and provide a much better return on investment than pursuing a PhD or PsyD in psychology. Please help me out! Is there a website that lists this sort of information?[View Answers]

Computer experiment program?0Justin2012-11-05 03:26:30
I'm conducting a psychology experiment. It involves subjects connecting names to faces from an old random yearbook. One part asks them to make up a name that best fits the face, another asks them to connect names from a name bank to each face in a group of faces. The last part provides them with the real names of the people and I ask them if the name best fits the face. The control for each would be the real names of the people. I need a program to download onto my computer where I can type in the results and it would help me organize them. I'm a high school student but I still need an advanced program. I'm also not doing it for a class, its for my own curiosity but I am thinking of going into this kind of field.[View Answers]

What are the chances I'll get in to a clinical psy.d. program?0Heather2012-11-05 03:17:44
What are the chances I'll get into a clinical psy.d. program with less than 1000 on my GRE, a GPA of just over a 3.4, a psychology GPA of a 3.8, and I've been doing research in the psych department at DePaul University for the past 6 months. I've taken probably around 13-15 psychology classes too which is well over what we need to graduate with this degree. A professor at the U of Minnesota told me I wouldn't get into a ph.d. program, but I would get into a psy.d. program? Does any who has any knowledge on this subject agree? Or have any additional input for me? [View Answers]
